Inlinewithchildcare Press Release – Awareness Campaign
For Immediate Release Inline skate around British Columbia
Bret Hernando, an ECE-certified childcare worker is undertaking a personal challenge to raise awareness about childcare in Canada by inline skating around BC. This trial run is precursor for his cross-Canada inline skate planned for next year. This year, his goal is to raise awareness of the many issues surrounding British Columbians in obtaining good quality childcare in Canada. His hope is that this endeavor will inspire other grassroots initiatives to help support a national childcare program.
Why do it?
Childcare affects everyone. It impacts families, but also our neighbourhoods, businesses and our communities. We need to see a greater commitment to providing Canadian families with affordable, accessible, high quality and universally inclusive care for children. The present government promised in 2004 to create a national early learning and childcare program.
Do we have one? Timeline
April 25th – Princeton Launch
Bret will be commencing his inline skate around BC from Princeton with a 138km skate to Merritt. Bret plans on arriving at the Parliament Buildings in Victoria before the new school year in September.
May 1st – Sendoff Trafalgar Elementary 9.30am
4170 Trafalgar Street Vancouver BC
The Trafalgar Out Of School-Care Society (TOOSCS) and staff and students of Trafalgar Elementary School support Bret in his goal to skate around BC. Bret is an employee of TOOSCS and has watched the struggles to secure funding and a new location after it had lost space in the elementary school due to seismic upgrading. He has also seen that TOOSCS is not alone; other schoolcares and daycares have been affected in similar or other situations.
An assembly is scheduled for 9.30am and ALL are welcome to do a celebratory lap around the block with Bret before he starts his journey.
